Frequently Asked Questions

A club is an organization within a particular school consisting of a group of youth who get together and play pickleball. They can be any level and of any experience. Anyone is invited to participate. The Club is overseen by a student advisor under the direction of a faculty advisor or parent advisor. Clubs should practice together every week and may use GroupMe to communicate. See the “Start a Club” page for more information.
A team, on the other hand, is a competitive group of youth chosen from your club at tryouts to represent your school at a competition. For the 2025 UHSPA season, a team is comprised of six starters (3 males and 3 females) for each weekly meet, plus an additional male and female sub. Coaches may choose to rotate different players from their club into their team at any time at their discretion. To register a Team for the League, click here.

Yes! Feeder Jr High and Middle School students will be able to try out for a High School team if they live in the boundaries of a School that has a Club. It is your responsibility to contact that High School and find out about tryouts/club practices etc., or to help your High School form a Club.
-
You are welcome to submit a team for the UHSPA meets and State Tournament only AFTER forming a club at your school after the “Start a Club” process. Each team must represent a High School, and each High School must have a Club formed in order to compete in the meets and tournament.
-
Sorry, you will need to wait until you are Jr. High age to try out.
-
Homeschooled youth are eligible to participate in the High School whose boundaries they live in. No exceptions. Please contact your local high school to see if they have formed a Club so you can be participate.
-
No, sorry. This is by High School boundary only. Please grow your club and invite new friends to play so your school can participate.
-
We're sorry. Although it is great that you have such a successful pickleball club at your school, due to our limited capacity of 32 teams, we can only accept one team from each high school for this initial year. Advisors will need to run tryouts so that they can select the best players to represent their school. We anticipate that High School Pickleball will grow very quickly in the future and there we will be able to accommodate more teams in the future.
-
Please go to the “Start a Club” page to get details on how to start a pickleball club in your school.
-
We only have spots for 32 High School teams to participate this first year. We can only take teams that have an adult advisor at this time. Part of the UHSPA initiative is to get pickleball sanctioned by 2026. In order to do this, we want to help schools get clubs set up at their high schools. A school advisor (teacher) is recommended, or parent volunteer. Please see the “Start a Club” page for more information.
-
UHSPA is collaborating with many indoor pickleball facilities to secure highly discounted court rates for students to have team practices after school. Please reach out to your local indoor club and ask if they offer a discount. You can also contact info@uhspa.org and we will let you know what Clubs are available close to you. You can always practice for free outdoors in your local community courts.

The State Tournament is for your high school team, consisting of 6 people (a Boys team, a Girls team, and a Mixed doubles team) that will compete together in “meets” for six weeks. At the end of the 6 weeks, the bottom ranked 16 teams will play in our Division II State Tournament on Sat April 19th. The top ranked 16 teams will play in our Division I State Tournament on Sat April 26th.
The Individual State Tournaments will be the following week, and schools will choose their best male and female to compete in singles on Thur May 1st, their best boy and girl to compete in mixed doubles on Fri May 2nd, and their two best boys and girls to compete in boys doubles and girls doubles on Sat May 3rd. Guidelines and dates to submit names for the Individual State Tournament will be given at a later date.

Each team can bring one extra male and one extra female each week. They will be the designated subs for the week. Because scores are entered into DUPR, subs are not just allowed to sub in and out of games randomly. Subs are only allowed to play full games (and then their names will be traded out in the app so their dupr is used) In the case of an injury, the team who was injured will keep the score they had at the time of the injury, and the other team will score 21, rather than forfeiting the whole game. A sub may then start for the next game in that round.
Players who started are NOT allowed to move to another division during the same round. For example, a player who competed in boys doubles and finished his best two out of three quickly, may not sub in for his school in mixed doubles that round. When playing the next match against another school, players can choose to switch to a different event, but can only play in one event, per round, per evening. This allows more team members to participate and encourages unity within the team. High level players will enjoy the individual championships at the end of the season.
